Why Does Dry Eye Occur?

Dry eyes happen when the eye does not produce enough tears. You may suffer from a condition that causes you to not produce enough tears, or a condition that causes imbalanced tears with improper degrees of the components that constitute tears — oil, mucus, and water. Perhaps an environmental problem such as pollution or humidity is causing your dry eyes, or it could be the side effective of a medication you are taking. Even aging can cause dry eyes.

Whatever the cause, there are effective treatments available, such as:

  • Punctal occlusion
  • Prescription medications such as Restasis® or topical steroid drops
  • Supplements such as HydroEye
  • Artificial tears / ointments
  • OptiLight IPL laser
  • LipiFlow®

Request a Dry Eye Evaluation at Our Dallas/Fort Worth Facilities

When you call Key-Whitman Eye Center, we can schedule a dry eye evaluation at one of our conveniently located clinics in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. In this process, we evaluate the oil glands and tear osmolality. We also look the cornea and eyelids to screen for any diseases that could be causing a lack of tears and use a tear layer interferometer to determine blink frequency and completeness and tear oil levels.
