Spring Allergies Making Your Dry Eye Worse? We Can Help
April 17, 2025Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, often progressing silently without symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. Fortunately, advancements in treatment are helping patients manage this condition more effectively. One of the most exciting developments in glaucoma care is Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, or MIGS —an innovative category of procedures designed to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) safely and effectively while minimizing risks and recovery time. In honor of World Glaucoma Week, we’re highlighting MIGS and the specific options we offer to help our patients protect their vision.
What are MIGS?
MIGS encompasses a variety of surgical techniques that enhance the eye’s natural drainage system to lower IOP. These procedures are significantly less invasive than traditional glaucoma surgeries and more convenient than daily drops making them an excellent option for many patients—especially those with mild to moderate glaucoma. MIGS are performed in conjunction with cataract surgery, providing dual benefits for patients needing both treatments.
The Benefits of MIGS
- Minimally Invasive: Unlike traditional glaucoma surgeries that require significant incisions, MIGS procedures use microscopic tools and small incisions, reducing the risk of complications.
- Faster Recovery: With less trauma to the eye, patients often experience quicker healing and a faster return to daily activities.
- Lower Dependence on Medications: Many MIGS procedures can help reduce or even eliminate the need for glaucoma eye drops, improving patient compliance and quality of life.
- Effective Pressure Reduction: MIGS is designed to enhance the eye’s ability to drain fluid, helping to control IOP and slow the progression of glaucoma.
MIGS Options We Offer
At Key-Whitman Eye Center, we are proud to provide several advanced MIGS options, each designed to target glaucoma in a unique way. Our offerings include:
iStent
The iStent is one of the smallest medical implants used in ophthalmology, designed to improve the eye’s natural drainage system by creating a permanent opening in the trabecular meshwork. This allows fluid to flow more freely, reducing IOP in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
Hydrus Microstent
The Hydrus Microstent is a tiny, flexible device that acts as a scaffold within the drainage system of the eye, improving outflow and reducing eye pressure. It is inserted during cataract surgery and is an excellent option for patients with mild to moderate glaucoma.
OMNI Surgical System
The OMNI system is a versatile MIGS procedure that combines two minimally invasive approaches: canaloplasty and trabeculotomy. By opening the eye’s drainage canal and clearing resistance points, OMNI can significantly enhance fluid outflow and provide effective pressure control.
AlloFlo
AlloFlo is an exciting biologic treatment that utilizes regenerative medicine to help restore and support the natural drainage system of the eye. By promoting healing and tissue regeneration, AlloFlo offers a unique approach to managing glaucoma progression.
Which MIGS is Right for You?
If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma and are looking for a safer, less invasive way to manage your condition, MIGS could be a great option. Your Key-Whitman Eye Center doctor will evaluate your specific needs and determine the best treatment plan to help preserve your vision.
